March 4: The NBA opened an investigation into Memphis Grizzlies guard Jah Morant after video surfaced of him brandishing a gun at a Colorado nightclub.

March 17: Three people finish the Barkley Marathon for the second time in the ultramarathon’s 37-year history.

April 2023

6: European champions England beat South American champions Brazil 1-1 (4-2) on penalties to win the first women’s tournament final.

22: Wrexham AFC, co-owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are promoted to the Football League after a 15-year absence.

27: Brittney Griner spoke at a news conference for the first time since she was released from Russia in December 2022 after being detained there earlier that year.

May 2023

14: The Grizzlies suspended Ja Morant after he was seen with a gun for the second time, this time on Instagram Live. The NBA later suspended him without pay for 25 games.

20: Manchester City won the Premier League.

21: Vinicius Jr., a player for Real Madrid and the Brazilian national team, is repeatedly subjected to racist abuse from the crowd at a match against Valencia.

June 2023

3: Manchester City won the FA Cup, beating arch-rivals Manchester United 2-1 in the final.

June 10: Iga Sviatek won the women’s singles at Roland Garros.

June 10: Manchester City win the Champions League by beating Inter Milan 1-0 to complete a historic treble.

11: Novak Djokovic won Roland Garros to become the leader in men’s Grand Slam titles (23).

12: The Denver Nuggets win the first NBA championship in franchise history, defeating the Miami Heat in five games.

13: The Vegas Golden Knights win their first Stanley Cup in just the sixth NHL season, defeating the Florida Panthers in five games.

July 2023

15: Major League Soccer club Inter Miami officially announced the signing of Lionel Messi.

15: Marketa Vondrousova wins the women’s singles at Wimbledon, becoming the first unseeded player to do so.

16: Carlos Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic in five sets, 1-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 3-6 6-4, to win the men’s singles at Wimbledon.

24: Bronnie James, son of NBA legend LeBron James, went into cardiac arrest during a USC basketball practice.

August 2023

August 15: Superstar Neymar Jr has signed for Saudi club Al Hilal, becoming the latest in a string of international players to move to the Saudi Professional League.

August 20: Spain win the Women’s World Cup for the first time, beating England 1-0 in the final.

20: The president of the Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales, has been accused of several incidents of inappropriate behavior after Spain’s victory, including a forced kiss with Jennifer Hermoso during an awards ceremony.

21: Sha’Karry Richardson wins the women’s 100m final at the World Athletics Championships.

24: Magnus Carlsen defeats 18-year-old Rameshbaba Pragnanandhaa to win the World Chess Cup.

25: Rubiales defiantly refused to resign at a press conference and denounced the rise of “fake feminism.”

25: Player Alexia Putellas posted on X (formerly Twitter) a message in support of Hermoso and started the social movement #SeAcabó (#It’s Over in English).

27: Simone Biles made history at the USA Gymnastics Championships by winning her 8th all-around title.

September 2023

9: American Coco Gauff won the women’s singles at the US Open.

September 10: Novak Djokovic wins the men’s singles at the US Open.

September 10: Luis Rubiales resigned as RFEF president, but did not apologize.

October 2023

6: Simone Biles won her sixth world all-around title in Antwerp, Belgium, cementing her status as the greatest gymnast of all time. She went on to win four gold medals at the event, bringing her total to 23 world titles – the most in the history of men’s and women’s gymnastics.

7: Max Verstappen became Formula 1 world champion for the third time, winning the sprint title at the Qatar Grand Prix.

16: The IOC announced that flag football, baseball/softball, cricket, lacrosse and squash will be included in the program for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

28: South Africa win the Rugby World Cup with a 12-11 win over New Zealand.

28: American hockey player Adam Johnson died while playing for the Nottingham Panthers in England.

30: FIFA banned Luis Rubiales from all football activities for three years.

30: Lionel Messi wins his eighth Ballon d’Or, a record.

30: Police confirm they are investigating the death of Adam Johnson.

November 2023

November 6: Iga Sviatek wins the Tournament of Champions and returns to world number one after defeating Jessica Pegula 6-1, 6-0.

November 19: Max Verstappen wins the first edition of the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

19: Novak Djokovic won the Tournament of Champions by easily defeating Yannick Sinner, 6-3 6-3.

December 2023

9: Shohei Ohtani announced that he is signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 10-year, $700 million contract was the largest contract in professional sports history.

December 21: The EU’s top court has ruled that FIFA and UEFA rules that blocked the creation of the controversial European Super League are illegal, potentially removing obstacles to the creation of the controversial soccer competition, News.ro reports.
