“These aircraft will be designed and manufactured entirely in Spain,” Mike Scholhorn, CEO of Airbus’s defense and space division, was quoted as saying in a group press release.

The aircraft will be assembled at the Airbus Defense and Space plant in Seville.

They are intended to “enhance the anti-submarine capabilities” of the Navy and Air Force, as well as their surveillance, reconnaissance, search and rescue capabilities.

In its maritime patrol configuration, the C295 will be “equipped to perform anti-submarine warfare, reconnaissance, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.” It will also be able to carry weapons such as torpedoes.

In a maritime surveillance configuration, the aircraft will be able to carry out “sea and land operations such as anti-smuggling, illegal immigration and drug trafficking operations, as well as national and international search and rescue missions.”

According to Airbus, the Spanish military already has a fleet of 13 Airbus C295s in transport configuration.
