The Russian Football Union (RFS) has voted against moving from UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) to AFC (Asian Confederation), Russian news agencies reported on Wednesday.
Russia voted against the transition to AFC and remains in UEFA
The forum decided to remain within the framework of the European Federation in the context in which Moscow wants to progress in relations with UEFA, reports Reuters.
In February 2022, FIFA and UEFA decided that all Russian teams, both national and club, would be banned from international competition after Moscow launched what it called a “special military operation” in Ukraine.
According to the head of the Russian Federation Oleksandr Dyukov, who announced this at the end of last year, Russia was considering the possibility of joining the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
“The issue (transfer to AFC) was discussed. I voted unanimously against it because there are no FIFA guarantees. We decided to continue our contacts with UEFA, especially since there is progress. Let’s see how the situation will develop next year” – Mykhailo Hershkovicha member of the RFS committee, quoted by RIA.
In recent months, FIFA and UEFA have eased restrictions on Russia’s junior national teams. UEFA said in September that “children should not be punished for actions for which adults are solely responsible.”
