The US Congress failed on Wednesday to pass a massive financial package of more than 106 billion dollars, which President Joe Biden insisted on, which includes funds for Ukraine and Israel, according to AFP, taken by Agerpres.

The Republican opposition refused to support the text, which is at the center of very tough negotiations, demanding significant concessions on the United States’ immigration policy in exchange for their votes.

The failure was a disappointment for Joe Biden, who had called for approval of the funds in a very solemn speech a few hours earlier.

Blocking them would be the “biggest gift” offered to Russian President Vladimir Putin, he warned, saying the Kremlin leader would “not stop there” if he succeeds in seizing Ukraine.

The Democrat clearly mentioned the hypothesis of a Russian attack on a NATO member country, which would trigger the entry of the United States into the war, and thus “American soldiers fighting Russian soldiers.” A situation which does not exist now and which Washington does not want, he insisted.

The United States is currently the country that provides the most important military support to Kyiv. Congress has appropriated more than $110 billion since the February 2022 Russian invasion.

But Democratic President Joe Biden’s pledge to continue financial support for Ukraine is in serious jeopardy, a disastrous scenario for Kyiv, whose summer counteroffensive has not produced the expected territorial gains.

Ukrainian officials insist they need more weapons to avoid Russian strikes plunging millions into darkness this winter, as they did last year.

But conservative congressmen, although many still publicly support Ukraine, condition this assistance on a clear strengthening of migration policy in the conditions of the arrival of migrants at the border with Mexico.

The Democratic president also said Wednesday that he is willing to make “significant compromises” on the issue in order to win the support of both houses of Congress.

Negotiations are ongoing.

Until those are completed, Washington announced Wednesday new military aid to Kyiv, capped at $175 million from executive reserves. Among them are anti-aircraft defense equipment, missiles and artillery ammunition, writes AFP.
