The attacker or attackers left the scene when police intervened after receiving a call at around 19:30 (18:30 GMT), police spokeswoman Ilse Van de Kere told Agerpres.

“So far, there is no element that could indicate that this is a terrorist act,” she emphasized.

For one out of four victims, the prognosis is difficult, reports the same source. The identities of the dead have not been specified.

The shooting took place on Avenue de la Toisson d’Or, a normally busy commercial street near a shopping center that houses many big brands. According to the Belgian mass media, the gallery was evacuated.

A security perimeter was established, traffic on the mentioned artery was partially blocked.

Belgian television images showed a large gathering of police cars and ambulances in the early evening.

Belgium is currently on the third level (out of four possible) of the terrorist threat, which is considered serious.

On October 16, a radical Tunisian killed two Swedish citizens with an automatic weapon on the evening of the Belgium-Sweden match in Brussels. The next day he was shot dead by the police.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack, AFP recalls.
