The MMR vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella, which is given to children in the family doctor’s office in two doses – at the age of 12 months (the first dose) and at the age of 5-7 years (the second dose) continues to work. to be the vaccine with the highest rejection rate in Romania, as it was during the measles epidemic 7 years ago.
The Ministry of Health yesterday evening announced a measles epidemic in Romania for the second time in 7 years.
Among the main reasons for refusal of vaccination of the CPC are failure to see a doctor, lack of vaccine in certain periods, as well as parents’ refusal of this vaccine, a higher percentage of refusals in the urban environment and the biggest problems, according to the data of the National Institute of Public Health, in the case of two doses.
2 doses of POR at the age of 5 years –61.1% urban vaccination coverage – 63.4% coverage of the village by vaccination – 62.1% of total vaccination coverage.
What are the main reasons for refusing the PDA vaccination?
The main reasons for refusal of POR vaccination (source: National Institute of Public Health):
- 1. The first place among the reasons for non-vaccination is non-attendance both together and separately, according to habitats. A higher value was recorded in the urban environment, the difference compared to the rural environment was statistically significant (p = 0.00001) CI 95% [ 0429977; 0546864].
- 2. “Birth/going abroad” was in second place among the reasons for refusing vaccination. both together and separately, according to habitats. A higher value was recorded in rural areas, the difference compared to urban environments was statistically significant (p = 0.0000) CI 95% [(- 0340458); (-0259459)].
- 3. The lack of the PDA vaccine ranked third among the reasons for non-vaccination both together and separately, according to habitats. A higher value was recorded in rural areas, the difference compared to urban environments was statistically significant (p = 0.0000) CI 95% [(- 026447); (-199782)].
- 4. Rejection of vaccination with the second dose of PDA has an important weight among the reasons for refusing vaccination, registering a higher value in the urban environment; the difference between the mean values of residence is highly statistically significant (p = 0.0000) 95% CI [003045; 0026921].
- The highest percentage of children refusing to be vaccinated with the second dose of MMR in the study sample was recorded in Ilfov County (25.1%), followed by the following counties: Arad (19.6%), Tulcea (12.5%), Konstanz ( 11.9%), Cluj (11.7%).
- In only 2 districts (Braila and Satu Mare) was failure to receive a second dose of MMR not reported as a reason for failure to receive vaccination according to the age of any of the children with a vaccination history examined.
- The proportion of age-appropriate reasons for non-vaccination in the total number of age-appropriate unvaccinated children is presented in the table below:
- 5) Medical contraindications to vaccination they recorded approximately the same values in urban and rural areas, the difference is not statistically significant compared to rural areas (p = 0.165) CI 95% [(-0008491); 0050099].
- Regarding the percentage of children with temporary medical contraindications in the studied sample, the values do not differ statistically significantly between living environments (p = 0.2193) CI 95% [(- 0010706); 0046901]being roughly equal in the village and the city.
- The highest proportion of this reason for non-vaccination according to age was registered in the counties of Arges (26.7%), Sibiu (22.9%), Tulcea (20.2%) and Botosani (18.6%).
- Temporary medical contraindications were not registered as age-appropriate reasons for refusal of vaccination for any of the children belonging to the studied sample in the districts: Bistrica – Neseud, Giurgiu, Jalomica, Ilfov, Prahova, Satu Mare.
- 277 children with obvious medical contraindications were registered: 173 in urban areas and 104 in rural areas.
