On Tuesday, Italian justice issued arrest warrants for five people accused of helping a Russian man under house arrest at the request of the United States to escape from Milan and return to his country, AFP reported.
The warrants were issued in Brescia (northern Italy), Slovenia and Croatia by Italian police in cooperation with Eurojust and US authorities, Milan prosecutor Marcello Viola said in a statement.
Prosecutors also issued an arrest warrant for Russian national Artem Uss, who escaped house arrest in late March despite wearing an electronic tag.
Washington accuses him of participating in the illegal export of American military technology to Russia.
The US Department of Justice said some of these technologies were “discovered on the battlefields of Ukraine.”
Italian investigators found that four cars were used to allow him to flee Milan and cross the border into Slovenia after months of preparation, Viola said.
According to Italian media, the five arrest warrants concern two Bosnians, one Slovenian and two Serbs.
Eurojust did not immediately respond to AFP’s inquiries.
On Tuesday, the US State Department announced a reward of up to seven million dollars for information leading to the arrest or conviction of Uss.
He managed to flee Milan the day after an Italian judge ordered his extradition to the United States.
US authorities have warned that Uss, a man of considerable financial resources, is a flight risk. In April, Uss announced that he had returned to Russia.
