What does it mean to have “rizz”?. The publisher of the famous Oxford English Dictionary named the slang word “rizz” as the word of the year 2023, which is synonymous with charm or success in the art of seduction. It appeared on social networks and was popularized by actor Tom Holland.
Oxford University Press, publisher of the Oxford English Dictionary, on Monday chose the word of the year for 2023 from a list of eight other expressions that “reflect the mood or concern of the year”, the BBC reports.
Do you have “rizz”?
Probably derived, in a shortened version, from the word charisma, “rizz” means “style, charm, attractiveness, the ability to attract a romantic partner,” according to Oxford University Press.
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, “rizz” comes from “charisma” and is characterized as charm, attractiveness, and the ability to attract a potential romantic partner.
The term can also be used as a verb in expressions such as “rizz up”, meaning to seduce or flirt with someone.
YouTuber Kai Cenat is the one who popularized the slang by using it all over the internet in discussions with his friends.
Kasper Grathwohl, chairman of Oxford Languages, said the use of the word “rizz” showed that internet expressions were becoming more common. The word of the year is used on social media by Generation Z with billions of hashtags on TikTok.
“Situationship”, “swiftie”, “parasocial”, among the words on the Oxford University Press shortlist
The word of the year was chosen from a list of eight words compiled by linguistic experts at Oxford University Press:
- Beige flag: a character trait that shows that the partner is boring or unoriginal;
- Situation: informal romantic relationship (provisional definition);
- Parasocial: A relationship characterized by an unbalanced sense of closeness that a fan or follower feels with a famous person (usually a celebrity) in which the fan feels that he or she knows him or her as a friend;
- Heat dome: a system of high atmospheric pressure over a certain geographical area, trapping a mass of warm air under it (preliminary definition);
- Swiftie: An avid fan of the singer Taylor Swift (preliminary definition);
- Hint: an instruction given to an artificial intelligence program, an algorithm that affects the content it generates (temporary definition);
- De-influence: The practice of preventing people from buying certain products or encouraging people to reduce their consumption of material goods through social media (provisional definition).
According to the BBC, the British publisher said it will include the terms “situationship”, “heat dome”, “swiftie”, “prompt” and “de-influencing” in the dictionary after assessing their duration, frequency and degree of use. (Photo: Dreamstime.com)
