The Pentagon said it was aware of reports of attacks on a US warship and several merchant vessels in the Red Sea, Sky News reported.
“We are aware of reports of attacks on the USS Carney and merchant vessels in the Red Sea and will provide information as soon as it becomes available,” he added, according to Sky News.
It comes after Britain’s Merchant Marine Operations Agency said it had received reports of a drone attack in the Bab al-Mandab Strait in the Red Sea.
Earlier, the agency reported drone activity from Yemen, as well as a possible explosion, and asked ships in the area to be cautious.
A series of attacks have been reported in Middle Eastern waters since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas.
Last month, Houthi fighters seized a commercial ship bound for Israel.
The group is allied with Iran and controls much of Yemen’s Red Sea coast.
It has previously launched ballistic missiles and military drones at Israel and has vowed to target more Israeli ships.
The crew of the guided-missile destroyer USS Carney, operating in the northern Red Sea, shot down three cruise missiles and several drones launched by Yemen’s Houthi forces on October 19.
The Houthi group claims that the targets were two Israeli ships
According to Reuters, the Houthi group said that the targets were two Israeli ships.
A spokesman for the group said it fired a naval missile at one of the ships and targeted another from an armed drone.
They named the two ships Unity Explorer and Number Nine and said they were targeted after they ignored the group’s warnings.
