The House of Representatives voted 311-114 to immediately remove the controversial nominee, exceeding the two-thirds majority needed to impeach a member of the legislature.

About a hundred Republicans and more than 200 Democrats voted to impeach the 35-year-old man.

The House of Representatives has so far resorted to such a sanction only five times in its history.

After his election in November 2022, following an exposé by The New York Times, George Santos was forced to admit that he had lied about entire periods of his life to embellish his resume. Therefore, he had to admit that he had never worked for the big American banks Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, and he did not have a higher education from New York University (NYU). Elected in New York state, he was also accused of defrauding his donors, money laundering and fraud. He pleaded not guilty.

Botox and OnlyFans

The congressman, whose deceptions caused an uproar in social networks, for a long time managed to overcome calls for his resignation, which were heard immediately after the swearing-in by elected officials of both camps.

However, the ethics committee of the Chamber of Deputies published a report accusing him of “seriously discrediting” the institution. According to the commission, the elected official “sought to fraudulently exploit every aspect of his candidacy for personal financial gain” and “repeatedly lied to his constituents, donors and staff about his background and experience.”

According to the report, the elected official used the stolen money for purchases at the luxury store Ferragamo, at a casino, for cosmetic procedures with the use of botox and on the platform OnlyFans, where users can share their videos and photos of a sexual nature.

George Santos responded by calling the text “political slander”, while assuring that he would not run for re-election in 2024.

On Friday morning, however, the elected official seemed to have resigned. “I resigned myself to my fate. If it is God’s will to leave me here, I will stay; if it’s God’s will for me to go, I will go,” he told Fox News on Friday morning, hours before the vote.

He was subpoenaed by the chairman of the Republican-dominated House Ethics Committee, Michael Guest, who deemed him “unfit to be a member” of the body.

A previous request for his expulsion was rejected because he did not receive the necessary two-thirds majority of the representatives present.

His expulsion from Congress reduces the Republicans’ already slim majority to 221 seats compared to the Democrats’ 213.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has 10 days to call a special election to fill a vacant congressional seat. Elections should be held 70-80 days after this announcement. Before Santos won in 2022, the district was represented by Democrat Tom Suozzi, who ran unsuccessfully for governor. Suozzi and 19 other candidates, including eight Republicans, have filed to run for Santos’ seat.

The last elected member of the House of Representatives to be ousted by his colleagues was Ohio Democrat James Trafficant, who was impeached in 2002 on ten charges, including corruption. The following week, he was sentenced to eight years in prison.
