An Arizona grand jury on Wednesday indicted two Republican commissioners on interference and conspiracy charges for trying to delay the certification of the 2022 election, Arizona Attorney General Chris Mays said, Reuters reported.
According to the state indictment, Cochise County Supervisors Peggy Judd, 61, and Tom Crosby, 64, conspired to delay the certification of votes cast in Cochise County for the November 2022 general election.
Both supervisors sought delays, including a manual vote count, as they raised questions about the proper certification of the county’s voting machines, even though they received legal advice that such delays would be illegal, the Arizona Republic reported.
“Repeated attempts to undermine our democracy are unacceptable,” Mayes said in a statement. “I am sworn to uphold the rule of law, and my office will continue to enforce Arizona’s election laws and support our election officials in fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of their offices.”
Crosby’s attorney said his client raised legitimate questions about the vote verification and never intended to delay it.
“We are confident that when the facts are investigated impartially and not through a partisan effort under the guise of law enforcement, Mr. Crosby will be fully exonerated of any charges. There was no interference or conspiracy involved,” attorney Dennis Wilenczyk said in an email.
If convicted, they face up to 2 1/2 years in prison and a $150,000 fine, according to the Arizona Republic.
Voting machine polling tactics were also used by former President Donald Trump’s supporters after the 2020 presidential election as part of his false claims that voter fraud led Joe Biden to the White House.
Trump now faces federal and Georgia charges for trying to overturn his election loss.
