Argentina’s new president, Javier Miley, who in recent years has called Pope Francis everything from a “son of a bitch” to an “imbecile” to a devil on earth, spoke by phone with his compatriot on Tuesday, addressing him from “Your Holiness,” reports Reuters.

The Vatican said they spoke late in the afternoon, but did not disclose what was discussed or who initiated the conversation.

Argentinian newspaper La Nacion reported, citing sources in Miley’s party, that the conversation was “pleasant” and Miley addressed the Pope “Su Santidad” (Your Holiness).

Before deciding to run for president, Millais launched a series of attacks on the Pope, calling him a “social justice imbecile,” a “son of a bitch who preaches communism,” and “the representative of evil on Earth.”

In September, priests from the poor neighborhoods of Buenos Aires, the Pope’s birthplace and where he served as archbishop, held a Mass to defend Francis and condemn Miley’s attacks on him.

The newspaper also reported that the Pope had initiated the conversation, which was said to have lasted eight minutes, and that Millais had invited the Pope to visit his homeland.

Francis, 86, has made more than 40 trips outside Italy since his election 10 years ago as the first Latin American pontiff, but has yet to visit Argentina.
