A group of 27 US congressmen, all from the Democratic Party, wrote to Elon Musk on Tuesday to express their concern that “X”, the social media platform he owns, is profiting financially from Premium accounts that glorify violence against Israelis. Reuters reports.
In their open letter to Musk and X CEO Lida Jaccarino, the Washington lawmakers cited NGO reports showing that users with Premium accounts on the social media platform “glorify barbaric acts of violence against Israelis.”
The letter marks the latest spat between Musk, who bought the Twitter platform last year and later renamed it “X,” and those advocating for better content moderation on the social network.
“X” sued the left-wing NGO Media Matters on Monday, accusing it of defaming the platform after it published a report that ads from major brands appeared on the social network alongside posts glorifying Adolf Hitler and nazi party Musk announced the lawsuit over the weekend.
“X”, accused of allowing the propaganda of a terrorist organization
But the US congressmen note in their letter that “these reports have demonstrated that X is profiting from the distribution of this horrific and harmful propaganda through subscription fees and advertising revenue.”
Democratic lawmakers noted that much of the incriminating content can still be found on the social media platform, even though it has already been flagged by independent groups.
“X also benefited financially from the distribution of patently false and misleading content,” the letter continued.
The congressmen also recalled that since 1997, Hamas has been recognized by the United States as a terrorist organization, which means that knowingly providing material support or resources to the group is illegal.
“There is no doubt that the violent videos produced by this group fall under this policy. These are recordings that contain the brand and iconography of Hamas,” the congressmen said in the letter.
