>> Romania at EURO 2024 – Why the match with Switzerland is important and what a hellish group could look like for the tricolors
Throughout history, the “tricolor” missed many qualifying matches, and Romania participated in only five tournaments: 1984, 1996, 2000, 2008 and 2016.
The one that will take place in 2024 will be the sixth in history.

Statistics are not on Romania’s side at the European Championship, the only victory over England at Euro-2000 with a score of 3:2. Actually, this success brought the tricolors the only way out of the group stage.
Below is the history of Romania’s participation in the European Football Championship
Romania at EURO 1984
The first edition to reach the tricolor was in 1984, which was held by France. Mircea Lucescu became the breeder.
As fate would have it, Romania will be in Group 2 along with Spain, Portugal and Germany.
The tricolors finished last with only one point.
Romania – Spain 1-1 (Bologna 35 / Carrasco 22 penalty)
West Germany – Romania 2-1 (Fowler 25, 66 / Coras 46)
Portugal – Romania 1-0 (Nene 81)
Group 2, standings

The second Euro, for which Romania qualified, was the one that took place in 1996 and was held in England. The breeder was Angel Iordanescu.
Romania came after a successful participation in the World Cup in the USA: the tricolors reached the quarter-finals, where Sweden knocked us out on penalties.
Although expectations were high, the tricolor of the Golden Generation did not work out in England. Romania was in a group with France, Spain and Bulgaria.
The Tricolors finished in last place with zero points, scoring one and conceding four.

At the final European tournament, which was hosted by the Netherlands and Belgium, the “tricolor” got into group “A”, as it was then called “death”. Emeric Janey became the breeder.
Romania was next to Portugal, England and Germany.
However, it was the best participation in the history of our first representative team: with 4 points, Romania reached the quarter-finals, where it was eliminated by Italy (2-0).
Germany – Romania 1-1 (School 28 / Moldova 5)
Romania – Portugal 0-1 (Costinha 90+4)

Romania at EURO-2008
After an eight-year break, Romania again qualified for Euro 2008, which was hosted by Austria and Switzerland.
The tricolors under the leadership of Viktor Pitsürke found themselves in a new “group of death” along with Holland, Italy and France.
Romania finished third in Group C, narrowly missing out on qualification: although the Netherlands used a reserve team, the tricolors were not strong enough to win and send home France and Italy in the group.

Netherlands – Romania 2-0 (Huntelar 54, Van Persie 87)

Romania at EURO-2016
The last European final tournament for which Romania qualified was in 2016 in France.
The Tricolors, coached by Angel Iordenescu, were drawn in Group A alongside France, Switzerland and Albania.
Unfortunately, the development of the “yellows” was far from what was expected, and Romania returned home from the group stage: they were last.
France – Romania 2-1 (Giroud 57, Payet 89 / Stancu 65 penalty)
Romania – Switzerland 1-1 (Stanku 18 penalty / Mehmedi 57)
