The United States said Thursday it was “deeply concerned” by an attack on a Jordanian military hospital in Gaza that wounded seven people and opposed “airstrikes on hospitals,” AFP reported.
“We are deeply concerned that there are injuries,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters, praising the Jordanian government’s “incredible work” in delivering aid to the besieged and bombarded Gaza Strip by the Israeli military following the October 7 attack by Hamas.
Seven medical workers were injured in a strike outside a Jordanian hospital in Gaza City on Wednesday, Jordan’s Petra news agency reported, prompting sharp condemnation from the Arab League.
“As we have said, we do not want hospitals to be hit by airstrikes (…) and we reiterate to all parties that they must take the necessary precautions to reduce the risk to civilians,” he said, without condemning the attack.
On Thursday, the Israeli military raided al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s largest, checking every building inside it, which it says is a Hamas hideout, despite the presence of patients and civilians trapped in the fighting.
Washington, which provides significant military aid to Israel, is steadfast in its support for its ally after the deadly Hamas attack, saying it has a duty and obligation to defend itself against the Palestinian Islamist movement, while expressing concern over the way Israel is waging wars and against the high death toll Palestinians.
