Russia has deployed another strategic nuclear missile equipped with the Avangard hypersonic glide vehicle, which it says is its answer to US anti-missile defenses, the Interfax news agency reported on Thursday, as quoted by news.ro.
According to Reuters, the Avangard, based in the Orenburg region of southwestern Russia, can be carried by an intercontinental ballistic missile and travel at speeds up to 27 times the speed of sound (about 21,000 mph, 34,000 km/h) while maneuvering to your goal
Such missiles are more difficult to intercept with missile defense systems, and Russia considers them necessary to maintain the nuclear status quo of mutual assured destruction.
Russia deployed its first Avangard-equipped missile in 2019 at the same location in Orenburg.
