The United States launched strikes in Syria on Sunday against two targets linked to Iran in response to attacks on American personnel in the region, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said, AFP reported, citing Agerpres.
“US forces today conducted precision strikes against targets in eastern Syria used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Iran-affiliated groups in response to ongoing attacks on US personnel in Iraq and Syria,” Austin said in a statement.
“The strikes hit a training center and a guarded residence, respectively, near the towns of Albu Kamal and Mayadin,” he said.
It is the third time in less than three weeks that the US military has struck targets in Syria it says are linked to Iran, which backs various armed groups that Washington blames for renewed attacks on its forces in the Middle East.
The United States targeted an arms storage facility linked to Tehran on Wednesday, and on October 26 the US military struck two other sites in Syria that it said were being used by Iran and its affiliates. The United States said the strikes resulted in no casualties
