Sicily’s Mount Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano, erupted overnight and spewed lava, but there was no major ash plume over the Italian Mediterranean island and no damage, DPA reported.

Operations at Catania Airport, located on the island, continued to operate as normal on Saturday morning, although the Italian Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) raised the alert level by one level, from yellow to orange, Agerpres reported.

Red-hot lava and volcanic material could be seen at night as it spewed from the crater and then flowed down the mountain.

Particularly intense activity of the volcano was recorded at the level of the southeastern crater.

Etna is the largest active volcano in Europe, its height is about 3300 meters.
