Romania’s women’s basketball team made its debut with a win in the current 2025 European Championship qualification campaign.

Romania – Iceland 82-70 (45-38), in preliminary matches of the European Basketball Championship among women

On Thursday in Constanta, the tricolors defeated the Iceland national team with a score of 82-70 (45-38).

The main scorers of the game were Podar 14 points, Virjoge 13, Manea 12, Irimia 12 in Romania, Benonisdottir 23 respectively in Iceland.

In the other Group F first leg game, also on Thursday, Turkey vs. Slovakia, 75-40.

The tricolors will play their next match on Sunday, also in Constanta, against Slovakia.

In 2024 and 2025, the following preliminary matches will be played: Turkey v Romania (November 7, 2024), Iceland v Romania (November 10), Slovakia v Romania (February 6, 2025) and Romania v Turkey (February 9).

The first place in each group will qualify for the final tournament, along with the other four best-ranked second-placed teams, according to News.ro.

The final tournament of the 2025 European Championship will be hosted by four countries for the first time: Germany, the Czech Republic, Italy and Greece.

The winner of the trophy is Belgium, which unexpectedly suffered a defeat at the first stage of the EC2025 qualifying tournament at home against Poland (62-67).
