Ukraine cannot become a member of the EU, if it fails to achieve peace, its entry will lead to a war in the community, which, obviously, no one wants, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Hungary Peter Szijarto said in Lisbon. , as a reaction to the expansion package announced by the European Commission, MTI agency reports, News.ro reports.
According to the press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, before leaving for Guatemala, the minister stated that the assessment that Ukraine does not meet the conditions for receiving a candidate in the EU is correct, especially regarding the violation of community principles regarding the rights of national minorities.
“Since the European Commission believes that Ukraine has not fulfilled the conditions of accession, for this reason we also do not consider it expedient to continue the steps in the accession negotiations with Ukraine,” the head of Hungarian diplomacy emphasized.
On the contrary, the Hungarian government considers it expedient to discuss the future policy of the European Union towards Ukraine.
“There is a war going on in Ukraine, so we see that neither freedom of the press nor freedom of speech is respected, and we see that elections are not organized either. Obviously, it would be absurd for the institutions or member states of the European Union to take a position on how the institutions of the rule of law function in Ukraine under such circumstances,” said the politician from Budapest.
He noted that it is quite clear that until there is peace in Ukraine, the country is unsuitable for becoming a member of the EU. “So now, with Ukraine, the war will go to the European Union, which, obviously, we don’t want, we can’t want,” said Peter Szijjártó.
“Enlargement should serve the expansion of peace, not the entry of war into the European Union,” the politician warned.
“Therefore, we believe that at present any progress in the negotiations regarding the accession of Ukraine is not appropriate. And, of course, we, Hungarians, continue to expect from Ukraine the return to the Hungarian community of Subcarpathian Ukraine of the rights it already enjoyed in 2015,” Peter Sijarto emphasized.
The Community is facing serious problems in the economy and security, it is losing its strength, and the accession of new member states, starting with the Western Balkans, would be a very important tool for its revival, the minister explained in connection with the recent enlargement package. European Commission.
“This is a process that has not been completed for 20 years. The place of the Western Balkans is obviously in the European Union. The accession of the countries of the Western Balkans could bring momentum and new energy,” said the head of Hungarian diplomacy.
He emphasized that the key country in the region is Serbia, which a group of experts from Brussels rightly concluded that it has made significant progress on the path of integration.
“Therefore, the new chapters of the accession must be opened as soon as possible, the process must move forward as quickly as possible and be completed as soon as possible,” said Peter Sijarto.
He also welcomed the fact that Georgia was granted candidate status, which he believed should have been granted a long time ago, which effectively means that the EU has just settled its previous debt.
The European Commission recommends that the European Council start accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, taking into account the results obtained by the two countries, after Chisinau and Kyiv adopt some important reforms, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Wednesday. As for Georgia, the European executive believes that it can get the status of a candidate country for accession.
