Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki will get his first chance to form a government after the victory of his nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party. last month’s electionthe president said on Monday – a seemingly impossible task because he lacks a majority, Reuters reports.

An alliance of pro-European opposition parties won a majority in the October 15 election, but President Andrzej Duda said before the election that he would first give the party with the most seats the chance to form a government.

PiS, which has been in power since 2015, won first place in the October elections but lost its majority. Since all other parties have ruled out forming a coalition with it, it is unlikely that the party will be able to govern.

“After calm analysis and consultations, I decided to entrust the task of forming a government to Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki,” Duda, a PiS ally, said in a televised speech.

Duda’s decision was welcomed by PiS spokesman Rafal Bohenek, who called it a “confirmation of the long-standing constitutional tradition of our country” in a post on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

If Moravetsky cannot receive a vote of confidence in the parliament, the chamber will appoint another prime minister.

It will probably be the former president of the European Council, Donald Tusk, the candidate of the main opposition parties for the post of prime minister.

Tusk, a former president of the European Council, urged Duda not to delay his appointment as prime minister, saying a delay could hurt his chances of unlocking Poland’s earmarked funds, which have been frozen by Brussels amid disputes over judicial reforms.

Tusk said he would eventually become prime minister, whatever Duda decided.

The appointment of the Europhile Tusk would mark a sea change for Poland after eight years of tensions with Brussels over issues ranging from migration to LGBT rights.
