Less than half of all citizens of the Republic of Moldova with the right to vote took part in the local elections held on Sunday throughout the country, less in the so-called separatist republic of Transnistria, reports Agerpres.
Data collected by the Central Election Commission (CEC) show that out of 2,760,930 voters registered in the electoral rolls, only 1,147,394 showed their right to vote, which is 41.4%.
The level of participation in voting is lower than in 2019, when a turnout of 41.68% was recorded.
In Chisinau, the turnout was 40.95%, the number of voters was 266,947.
In order for elections to be recognized as valid, the turnout for elections in a locality must exceed 25% of the total number of voters registered in the electoral rolls.
In the elections for the post of mayors in 898 settlements of the Republic of Moldova, the candidate who receives 50%+1 vote is recognized as the winner. In the absence of a simple majority, the first two participants with the highest number of votes advance to the second round, which will take place on November 19.
