At least 23 people hiding in four UN facilities in the Gaza Strip were killed by Israeli airstrikes on Thursday, according to updated figures from the UN humanitarian office, CNN reports.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), nearly 20,000 displaced people were sheltering in these facilities run by the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) when they were hit.
“As of 2 November, nearly 1.5 million people from Gaza were internally displaced, with over 690,400 people in 149 UNRWA facilities,” OCHA said in a statement.
Since October 7, the escalation of violence has killed 72 UNRWA staff and damaged 50 agency facilities, the statement added.
Philip Lazzarini, UNRWA’s commissioner-general, said earlier that the agency had received “distressing news” about schools in the Jabalia and Al-Shati refugee camps.
He told CNN’s Christiana Amanpour that three schools run by UNRWA were affected and at least 20 people were killed. (News.r0)
