“We have patients who give birth at the age of 12, 16, and 17, but in fact many mothers are at a very young age, from disadvantaged families, either go to school or drop out during pregnancy or after giving birth. In most cases, they don’t know they are pregnant, they don’t talk to their parents, they end up with an urgent pregnancy or delivery, possibly a premature pregnancy,” said doctor Catalina Marginianu on Medika TV on Wednesday. evening.

Merginianu noted that most often these girls either do not know that they are pregnant or hide their pregnancy.

“We try to organize childbirth in such a way that it is beneficial for both the mother and the fetus. There are mothers who do not investigate their pregnancy because they do not know that they are pregnant, or they hide the pregnancy from their parents. Of course, they can come with infections or pregnancy complications, or with rupture of the membranes due to infections, and then they end in premature birth,” said the doctor.

Cătălina Mărgineanu recalled the case of a 15-year-old patient who came to give birth in the maternity hospital and who had two children at home.

“I remember a case when I was on duty in Buzau and I was asked to see a 15-year-old pregnant woman, second trimester, and I ask: And the patient answers: . Of course, it was kind of shocking when he was 15 years old and had two children at home,” added Merginianu.

And doctor Andrii Dumitrescu, a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology at the Emergency Hospital of Calaras County, recalls that his youngest patient, who became a mother, was only 12 years old.

“The youngest age of a pregnant patient who gave birth with our team is 12 years, 6 months and a few days. A 12-year-old patient cannot be considered sane and can sign consent for any type of intervention, including those necessary to collect tests. And in this case, we need the signature of the legal owner.

In the vast majority of cases, family members, parents, are usually abroad or from other countries. It begins with the identification of the patient with the help of the police, and after hospitalization we try to handle the case as best as possible, and if emergency intervention is needed, a commission of 3 doctors is created to make decisions,” said Andrii Dumitrescu, who also drew attention to the lack of sex education lessons in schools

According to data from Save the Children presented on Medika TV, 32% of underage mothers were also born to underage mothers; 45 percent of births among girls under the age of 15 in the EU occur in Romania; more than 8 out of 10 mothers or pregnant women under 18 no longer go to school.

Also, according to the National Institute of Statistics, in 2022, 687 girls under the age of 15 became mothers. (photo: Motortion | Dreamstime.com)
