Amnesty International on Tuesday accused Israel of using white phosphorus projectiles in its bombardment of southern Lebanon in recent weeks, and one of those attacks, the attack on the city of Dayra, should be investigated as a “war crime” because it involved “indiscriminate use “prohibited weapons for civilian purposes, EFE agency writes.

The statement of the human rights organization indicates that its experts analyzed videos and photos of the attack, interviewed witnesses and medical personnel who provided first aid to the wounded, and discovered the use of this type of ammunition in the bombing of the Lebanese population on October 16.

“The Israeli army launched artillery shells containing white phosphorus”

  • “The Israeli army launched artillery shells containing white phosphorus, an incendiary weapon, during operations on the southern border of Lebanon between October 10 and 16 (…)
  • The attack on the city of Dayra on October 6 should be investigated as a war crime because it was an indiscriminate attack that injured at least nine civilians and affected civilian objects, and was therefore illegal,” Amnesty International said, according to EFE. the agency quotes Agerpres.

Additionally, Amnesty International says it has gathered evidence of Israel’s use of this type of ammunition in at least three other situations in southern Lebanon, an area where the Israeli army has been clashing with the pro-Iranian Hezbollah group since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7.

White phosphorus is a chemical used as ammunition in bombs, artillery shells, and rockets that ignites as soon as it is exposed to oxygen, a chemical reaction that produces a temperature of 815 degrees Celsius. These incendiary munitions also produce thick and toxic smoke.

On October 12, the non-governmental organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) also condemned the use of white phosphorus by the Israeli army in both Gaza and Lebanon.

Last week, Israel criticized Amnesty International, saying it was “biased” after the human rights group said in a statement that “serious violations of international humanitarian law, including war crimes, by all parties to the conflict continue unabated,” according to POLITICO.
