The IDF said there was a clash “between a number of Palestinians and Israeli civilians” near the village of As Sawiya in the northern West Bank on Saturday, Sky News reported.

It said that “an IDF soldier on leave is suspected to have used his combat weapon and fired during the incident, causing the death of a Palestinian.”

According to her, the soldier was detained yesterday.

The first report, cited by Haaretz and the Times of Israel, said Bilal Muhammad Saleh, 40, was shot in the chest and that his death was confirmed by the Palestinian Authority’s Ministry of Health and military sources.

According to Haaretz, Saleh was part of a group picking olives near a village near Nablus when he was attacked by settlers.

It appears that several olive groves were attacked in the area.

A video circulating on social media, which does not show how the incident began, shows a group of at least four settlers dressed in white. At some point, something like a shot is heard.

Earlier this week, US President Joe Biden criticized Israel for not taking action against extremist settler violence.

Biden has reportedly urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in phone calls in recent days to ensure that Israeli authorities prevent an increase in settler violence, fearing that rising tensions in the West Bank could significantly escalate the ongoing war in Gaza.
