Britain’s position on a possible cease-fire between Israel and Hamas for humanitarian reasons “was not clear”, Peter Millett, the former British ambassador to Jordan, told Sky News.
Peter Millett also said a pause in hostilities would be the best way to “ensure the safety of hostages” as well as women and children.
He said: “I think a ceasefire is the best way to give diplomacy time to work.”
“I do not believe that bombing civilians with airstrikes is the best way to secure the release of the hostages or long-term peace and stability for Israel,” the former diplomat said.
Looking at the region as a whole, Millett said there is a “great risk of drawing Hezbollah, the Iranians, the Houthis and others into a much bigger conflagration.”
“And this is not in the interests of Israel’s security, not to mention the security of the East or the world,” he added.
