The Israeli military distributed leaflets in Gaza on Tuesday urging Palestinians to provide information about hostages held by Hamas terrorists, offering them protection and rewards, Reuters reported.
The Palestinian militant group Hamas kidnapped more than 200 people in cross-border raids in Israel that killed 1,400 people on October 7. The Palestinian Ministry of Health says Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have killed more than 5,000 people since then.
“If you want to live in peace and have a better future for your children, do an immediate humanitarian act and share verified and valuable information about the hostages being held in your area,” the IDF leaflet said.
“The Israeli army assures you that it will make every effort to ensure the safety of you and your home, and you will be financially rewarded. We guarantee you complete confidentiality.”
The flyer includes phone numbers that Palestinians can call to provide information.
People taking shelter at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, collected leaflets and tore them up after being dropped by Israeli jets.
Addressing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, one Palestinian said: “We don’t care, do what you want. All of us in Gaza tell you that we are resisting, from east to west.”
Israeli forces are massed near the Gaza border, awaiting orders for a ground invasion to free the hostages and destroy Hamas.
Israel says the hostages, who include foreign nationals including a Romanian, have been taken to Gaza, but their exact whereabouts are unknown, making their rescue difficult.
Officials said many of them may be held in the maze of tunnels under Gaza.
Hamas has so far released four hostages and promised to release more “when conditions on the ground permit.”
