A Bucharest court has issued a new European arrest warrant for Mario Iorgulescu following his final sentence of 13 years and eight months in prison for causing a fatal accident in 2019, Justice Minister Alina Gorgiu announced.

The Minister of Justice stated that “the Romanian state was moving in the right direction” regarding the case of Mario Iorgulescu. Alina Gorgiu revealed that “now there is a final decision on the conviction for murder, a particularly serious crime,” reports News.ro.

“At the moment, this case is a judicial proceeding that is outside the competence of the Ministry of Justice, but I can inform the public that a European arrest warrant has already been issued by the executive court, namely Bucharest. Court,” the minister said.

Gorgiou clarified that there were previously two European warrants, one for the execution of a 3-year sentence for the crime of complicity in illegal deprivation of liberty, and the second time for preventive arrest in a case in which he was accused of committing murder and driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or other intoxication.

“Regarding this, in May 2022 the Court of Appeal of Milan decided not to execute two European arrest warrants, taking into account the applicant’s mental state, a state that does not allow him to participate consciously in the proceedings. In fact, the Romanian state’s request for translation for those who follow us, for the delivery of a fugitive to Romania, was blocked by an Italian court in 2022, last year, I was not a minister at the time, on the grounds that the person lacked discernment and did not may take part in the proceedings. Today we are at another stage, we are talking about a new European Arrest Warrant that will follow this course, I am sure that the Italian courts will consider this request and we can update you when we get the deadlines and how the communications magistrate in Italy can provide new information. At the moment, an arrest warrant has just been issued,” Gorgiou said.
