White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said on Sunday that a new arms package for Israel and Ukraine will cost well over $2 billion, Reuters reports.

Sullivan said in an interview with the CBS TV channel “Face the Nation” that US President Joe Biden will hold intensive talks with the US Congress this week on whether to approve the package.

Republicans’ scramble to pick a House speaker after hardliners ousted Kevin McCarthy nearly two weeks ago has delayed the legislation.

Biden considered a budget request that includes aid to Israel, Ukraine and possibly Taiwan to improve his chances of approval, amid calls from some Republicans to cut money for Kiev.

Asked if the $2 billion request would be $2 billion, Sullivan said, “Well, that number will be much higher, but as I said, it will certainly include the military equipment necessary to protect the freedom, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Ukraine and help Israel to protect itself in the fight against the terrorist threat.”
