The Israeli military “strongly” denies claims by Hamas that Israel struck convoys of Palestinians evacuating from the northern Gaza Strip, IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said.
“It is not true. The one that cynically uses its own citizens and uses them as human shields is Hamas,” Hagari said, adding that Hamas spreads “false and manipulative information.”
“The explosion rang out from below”
Israeli Colonel Peter Lerner also told CNN on Sunday that the Israeli army did not hit the column on Salah Al-Din Street.
“It was only this morning that we were able to confirm and announce that this was not an IDF strike,” Lerner said.
He added that the images they had seen showed that “the explosion came from below”, indicating “some kind of explosive device”.
Most of the victims are women and children
Hamas blamed Israeli airstrikes on convoys leaving northern Gaza on Friday, killing dozens and injuring hundreds. BBC and CNN have determined the geolocation of the video that appeared after the massacre.
On Saturday evening, there were the first reports of an attack on a convoy of cars heading to the south of Gaza. Soon after, videos appeared showing the carnage at the scene.
BBC Verify confirmed that the strike took place on Salah al-Din Street, one of the two escape routes from northern Gaza.
The street was crowded all day as residents of northern Gaza left for the south following Israeli warnings to evacuate the area.
The footage shows at least 12 bodies, which has a strong emotional impact. And The Guardian published some of these images.
Most of the victims are women and children. The location of the shadows in the video suggests that it was taken around 5:30 p.m. local time.
BBC Verify has confirmed that women and young children were killed in the bombing of vehicles traveling from northern Gaza. Analysis of photographs from the scene shows that some of the dead were between two and five years old.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health said 70 people died at the scene and blamed Israel for the attack.
And CNN has geolocated and authenticated five videos from the site of a powerful explosion on the way to the evacuation of the civilian population.
It is not known what caused the explosion, CNN notes.
