Jim Jordan, chairman of the Judiciary Committee and one of the top Republicans close to Trump, was nominated on Friday in an internal vote by his party to be the speaker of the House of Representatives, party officials announced, quoted by AFP. and Reuters.
In a secret ballot, Jordan defeated Austin Scott, who also belongs to the conservative wing of the party.
According to the American media, he received 124 votes against 81, and his opponent.
Republican infighting paralyzed the White House for 10 days as lawmakers deadlocked over a successor to Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted on Oct. 3 by a small group of Republican insurgents.
Some Republicans say their problems run deeper than a simple lack of leadership.
“There is a lack of trust. There is a lack of transparency. That’s something we need to address before we actually get to the speaker,” said Congresswoman Kat Cammack.
Jordan’s next test is whether he can get the votes of all 217 members of the House, including Democrats, in a popular vote.
