Germany’s refusal to certify the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and buy Russian gas does not make economic sense, Vladimir Putin said, Sky News reports.

The Russian leader, speaking at an energy conference in Moscow today, said he could not understand why Germany still wants to buy Russian gas that is pumped through Ukraine, but not through the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

“That’s nonsense,” he said.

The Russian leader also said that the explosions that last year damaged the Nord Stream gas pipeline, which connects Russia to Europe, could not have been carried out without the support of some governments.

The gas pipeline crosses the Baltic Sea, starting near the Narva Bay in the Ust-Luga district of the Kingisepp district of the Leningrad region of Russia.

He arrives in Lubmin, a German town on the north coast near Greifswald.

It was completed in September 2021 but never entered service after Berlin canceled its certification days before Moscow sent troops into Ukraine.

Last September, explosions caused holes in both Nord Stream 1 pipelines and one of the Nord Stream 2 pipelines.

Russia has previously blamed the United States and Great Britain for the bombings, but both countries have denied involvement.
