The Kremlin seeks to use the Hamas attack on Israel to divert Western support and attention away from Ukraine, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said in an assessment on Sunday.
After Saturday’s attacks by Hamas on Israeli territory, Russian propaganda reinforced the message, accusing Western countries of neglecting conflicts in the Middle East in favor of supporting Ukraine in the war launched by Russia on February 24, 2022.
In a statement posted on X (Twitter) and Telegram, Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev once again lashed out at the West and called for a civil war in the United States, saying it is the only thing that can stop “America’s maniacal passion for fueling conflicts across the planet “.
“The conflict between Israel and Palestine has been going on for decades. And the US is a key player here. But instead of actively working for a Palestinian-Israeli settlement, these idiots have turned on us and are helping the neo-Nazis with all their might, pushing two nations close to each other into conflict. What can stop America’s maniacal desire to solve conflicts all over the planet? Probably just a civil war in the USA,” Medvedev wrote.
As part of this propaganda, pro-Russian military bloggers have largely focused their attention on Hamas attacks in Israel, actively promoting the Kremlin’s message.
ISW shows that Moscow’s propaganda messages about Hamas attacks in Israel are designed to influence the Western public and create a syncopation in military support for Ukraine. Also, Russia is using the situation in Israel, trying to demoralize Ukrainian society, through reports that Ukraine will lose the support of its Western allies, who will now support Israel.
Earlier this week, Russia launched its deadliest attack on Ukrainian civilians this year, killing 52 people.
