Angela and Mitika have been married for 8 years. In the spring of 2022, he changed jobs, moved from an accounting firm to a smaller one, where he does the same thing, and was very happy with a better schedule. They finish work no longer at 8-10 p.m., but around 5-6 p.m.

He thought it was a good thing that he was staying home more with his wife, who was finishing the program at the same time.

By the time he changed jobs, Mithika, coming home in the evening, was already very tired, ate something light, talked with Angela for a while, and then fell asleep.

They mostly didn’t spend much time together, except on weekends, when they spent with friends or went out of town to do various activities, such as mountain trails, walks to the sea, through the Delta, or relaxing in the city.

On their way back, since they finished work earlier, they had more time to spend together, which they saw as something positive. Well, it wasn’t.

In the summer, they occasionally went out “for lemonade” with friends. In winter, however, they stayed at home more. Thus they began to argue about various things, some small, some larger, and after a few months they began to understand “that they no longer fit.”

In February, Mytyka was already sleeping on the couch. They just couldn’t stand each other anymore, they no longer saw a future together. They scolded themselves for changing, they accused them of infidelity, because one of them would somehow take better care of a person of the opposite sex.

It so happened that at the beginning of spring, in March, they officially broke up, after months of misunderstandings: they turned out to be two strangers in the same house.

A month in which the number of divorces increases

On average, statistics show that Romanians divorce 13-15 years after marriage, and one out of 5 marriages ends in divorce.

In March, the number of divorces increases, if we take into account the statistics of recent years. This is a constant. Yes, sometimes there is a month that exceeds March, but it is not always the same.

*The data shows that in March 2018 the number of divorces increased by 11% compared to the previous month (to 3,108), in March 2019 by 17% compared to February (to 2,766). We skip the first year of the pandemic because the data is not relevant, and then we get to March 2021 with 18.6% (to 2,836) and 2022 with more than 4% (to 2,279).

Researcher, family sociology specialist Maria Voynya says that in order to draw final conclusions, research lasting 30-40 years is needed.

However, Voynya gave us an intuitive explanation.

Yes, the number of divorces increases in March due to winter. People stay at home more. In principle, it is better when husband and wife spend more time apart, that is, at work.

He goes to work, and in the evening he chats at home, maybe watches a movie, and then goes to bed. The nights are longer in the winter, and when they spend more time together, all kinds of tensions arise.

This could be one explanation, but as Maria Voynya also told us, it would take a thorough study over several years to know for sure.
