The petition, entitled “Justice for Lehel”, which has collected more than 700 signatures at the time of publication, is addressed to the judges of the Court of Appeal in Brasov, who will re-examine the case.

The signatories believe that the punishment received by the police officer in the first instance is “unreasonably lenient in relation to the gravity of the act committed by him”.

The accident in which a police officer from Covasna killed a man happened in December 2021 on the way out of the city of Sfantu Gheorghe. The investigation showed that the man drove a car in his free time while intoxicated and caused an accident, as a result of which the 28-year-old man died, writes CovasnaMedia.ro.

The man is still a policeman

The head of the Covasna District Police Inspectorate (IPJ), Alin Pakhontzu, said on Thursday that the man who caused the accident is still a police officer but has been transferred to another department. He specified that a final decision is expected to be made regarding the concrete determination of the professional future of the police officer, local media reported.

People are also considering organizing a protest in front of the Court of Appeal in Brasov on the day of the trial.

At the time of the accident, the “Anastasia” Law, 213/2023, was not in force, which clearly establishes that those responsible for road accidents resulting in the death of the victims, while driving vehicles, do not have a driver’s license, were driving a car or were under the influence of alcohol or psychoactive substances , will be sentenced only to the death penalty.
