Mioveni mayor Ion Georgescu, detained for abuse of influence after being caught red-handed while returning a €10,000 bribe, has been remanded in custody for 30 days.
The court’s decision is not final and may be appealed.
Ion Georgescu was arrested on Wednesday night for abuse of influence after he was caught red-handed by prosecutors returning €10,000 in bribes. According to judicial sources, the PSD informant of Mioveni mayor Iona Georgescu is the head of the local police of Pitesti, Nicolae Valerike, from whom the mayor asked for 30,000 euros, of which he received 10,000 euros, to hire his daughter in the local hospital. HotNews.ro.
Given that he did not keep his “promise” and did not hire the daughter of the local police chief of Pitesti, the mayor returned the 10,000 euros he received, after which he was caught by prosecutors. The loud action was organized by the prosecutors at the headquarters of the Mioveni City Hall, where Georgescu summoned his informant to return the money.
The hospital in Mioveni is the only one built by the state in Romania in the last 30 years, and although it opened in 2019, it is not even now operating at full capacity, one of the reasons being the lack of medical staff.
Details from the notice in which prosecutors demand the mayor’s arrest
In the arrest warrant report for the mayor, DNA shows that the whistleblower contacted Mayor Miowen in March 2022 to ask him to help his daughter, a surgeon, get a job at Miowen Hospital, provided that she was going to be born in December 2022 to complete her residency at the Sibiu District Hospital, and then she would be out of a job.

- From the evidence it became clear that there is a department of general surgery in Mioven City Hospital, and the medical director and manager of this medical department had responsibilities related to the appointment of certain people to the hospital.
- According to the “Regulations on the organization and operation of the Mioveni City Hospital”, defined on 12.06.2023 on the website www.spitalmioveni.ro, and by the head of the medical unit:
- “establishes and approves staff numbers by categories and positions in accordance with the current staffing standards and on the proposals of heads of departments and departments”;
- “approves the procedure for organizing a competition for filling vacant positions, appoints and dismisses hospital employees.”
- As a result of the steps taken by Georgescu Ion, (…..) he also assisted in some interventions / medical procedures carried out at the Mioveni Municipal Hospital, some of which were carried out by a doctor ( …. .).
- (…..)
- In December 2022, according to a previous agreement, (…..) transferred to Georgescu Ion a sum of 10,000 euros, for which he, together with the people who hold management positions in the city hospital of Mioveni, would intervene to appoint (. .. ..) in the position of general surgeon of this medical unit.
- During this period, Georgescu was repeatedly assured by Ion (…..) that he had influence over the people in management positions at the Mioveni Municipal Hospital, therefore (…..) was included in the position of head of general surgery in this medical department, a circumstance that clearly emerges, including from the discussions held in the environment (…..) and Georgescu Iona.
- (…..)
- In the circumstances when Georgescu Ion did not fulfill his promise, also taking into account the fact that in April-May 2023, at the level of the Mioveni City Hospital, a procedure was held for the position of a specialist in general surgery, it was a position intended for his daughter (… ..), he showed his disbelief regarding the completion of the steps promised by Georgescu Ion regarding the placement of (…..) in the Mioveni Municipal Hospital.
- In this context, Georgescu Ion assured (…..) that he would fulfill his part of the agreement and that (…..) would be assigned to the Mioveni Municipal Hospital during 2024, at the address at which he expressed his willingness to return the sum of money, received for her placement in the nursing unit.

- The recovery of the amount of EUR 10,000 was directly determined by the criminal investigation authorities.
- (…..)
- During the hearing as suspect Georgescu, Ion claimed that the 10,000 euros returned on 04.10.2023 (…..) represented the return of a loan granted by the latter earlier, but this aspect is completely contradicted by the evidence presented. in this case, given that during the hearing (…..) he claimed that the €10,000 was part of the €30,000 that Georgescu Ion had accepted for interfering in the affairs of persons holding managerial positions in the Mioveni Municipal Hospital , to hire (…..) – the daughter of (…..), as a general surgeon in this medical department, an aspect that is confirmed by the minutes of discussions in the environment to be reproduced , in which the two talk about the amount in 10,000 euros, granted for the purposes indicated by (…..) and not for the purposes indicated by Georgescu Ion, respectively as a loan.”
Ion Georgescu was the president of the PSD Mioveni organization and the vice-president of the PSD Arges, he was expelled from the PSD on Wednesday evening by the decision of the permanent office of the PSD Arges district.
