German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Wednesday that he is “convinced” that the United States will continue to support Ukraine’s military efforts, despite political unrest in Washington over the issue, AFP reported.
“I am absolutely convinced that the US Congress will do everything possible to ensure support for Ukraine,” Scholz told reporters after a telephone conversation on Tuesday with US President Joe Biden and his allies on the issue.
Biden met with Western leaders to reassure them after aid to Ukraine was cut as part of a deal struck in the US Congress on Saturday to avoid a government shutdown over opposition from hard-line Republicans.
But President Biden’s hopes for a quick passage of new Ukraine legislation were dashed on Tuesday, when the same hardliners confronted Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and removed him from office.
Biden met with the leaders of his main allies Britain, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Poland and Romania, as well as the leaders of the European Union and NATO and the French foreign minister.
During this call, he “reaffirmed the commitment of the United States to support Ukraine as long as necessary to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and other leaders reaffirmed their commitments,” the White House said in a statement.
Scholz said that after speaking with Biden, he believes that “among the Democratic Party and the Republican Party, a large number agree with this support (of Ukraine).”
