“Turkey no longer expects anything from the European Union, which makes us wait at its door for 40 years,” the Turkish head of state said at the opening of the new session of the parliament, adding that he “will not tolerate new demands or conditions.” in the process of Turkey’s accession to the EU, the process is currently blocked.

“If they do not abandon some injustices, such as the imposition of visas, which they use as a hidden sanction, if they do not correct their mistakes (…), they will completely lose the right to express political, social, economic or military expectations on our part” , Erdogan warned.

“If the EU intends to stop the process of (Turkey’s) accession, which exists only on paper, then it will be their decision,” the Turkish president added.

His outburst appears to have been prompted by a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), which this week condemned Turkey for a verdict in which a man was convicted of belonging to an armed organization solely because of his use of the ByLock encrypted messaging app. , a program that the Turkish government considers the privileged communication tool of the authors of the failed coup of 2016.

“The decision of the ECtHR is the last straw,” Erdogan added in his scathing appeal to the EU, even though the ECtHR is an institution affiliated with the Council of Europe, unrelated to the EU institutions.

“Members of the terrorist organization and their supporters, who are encouraged by this decision, should not hope in vain! This decision will not bring any relief to FETO’s criminal members,” Erdogan promised, referring to the organization’s cleric, Fethullah Gulen. , a refugee in the United States whom Ankara considers the author of the 2016 coup attempt.

“Turkey will not take a single step back in its fight against this gang of traitors. It will not allow any return to the past,” the Turkish president insisted.

His intervention came hours after a suicide attack on Ankara’s police headquarters and the Ministry of Interior, which are located in the same building. According to authorities, two attackers were killed, one detonating his explosive device, and the other was shot dead by police, and two policemen were injured.
