The surprise of the day at the WTA in Beijing was brought by Angelina Kalinin, an athlete from Ukraine (28th place in the world ranking) who beat Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in the first round with a score of 1-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Marketa Vondrousova was eliminated in the first round of the WTA in Beijing by Angelina Kalinina

The eighth seed got off to a great start, setting the pace, dominating the rallies and winning the first set 6-1.

However, it ended up being a bad day for Marketa: she started making more and more mistakes, gradually lost the initiative and ended up losing the second set 6-4 (the difference was only one break).

The decisive match became a nightmare for Vondrousova: she lost her serve three times, and could not create real problems in the return match. The opponent won the set with a score of 6-1, and Kalinina managed to make a surprise. The game lasted one hour and 47 minutes.

Marketa (24 years old) has 40 wins and 13 losses this season and won only one title: she lifted the All England Club championship trophy, which became the first major trophy in the career of a player from the Czech Republic.

The China Open is held in Beijing from September 30 to October 8 on hard, is part of the WTA 1000 category and has a total prize pool of $8,127,389.

The competition was last held in 2019 (it was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic), and then Naomi Osaka became the champion.
