The British Museum posted online on Tuesday photos of objects that resembled some of the hundreds of objects stolen from its collections and appealed to the public to help find them, Reuters and News.ro reported.

According to the chairman of the board, George Osborne, “around 2,000” objects have been stolen from the collections of the prestigious British cultural institution in recent years. This discovery caused a sensation and led to the resignation this summer of its director Hartwig Fischer.

Stolen objects are small objects that were not exhibited and were stored in the museum’s warehouses.

“Most” belonged to the section dedicated to Greece and Rome, states the British Museum. These are mainly jewelry, semi-precious stones and glassware, but on the advice of experts, the museum does not identify or describe them precisely.

The British Museum has already returned a small part of the stolen treasures

To find them, the museum on Tuesday released photos of similar items still in its collections, such as a gold bracelet, an engraved ring and a necklace with lion head clasps. The museum is asking anyone “who believes they own or had items belonging to the British Museum, or have information” that might help them, to contact the institution.

At the moment, “60 objects have been found, and another 300 have been identified and should be returned in the near future,” the museum said in a statement.

He also said he had registered the stolen items with the Lost Art Register, an international database used by people working in the art world, collectors, insurers and the police.

In mid-August, the agency said it had fired the employee, while London police said they had questioned the man but had not yet launched a criminal prosecution.
