The separatist authorities of Nagorno-Karabakh said late Monday that more than 200 people were injured in an explosion at a fuel depot and called for urgent foreign aid to deal with the disaster, AFP reported.
“The number of victims as a result of the explosion at the PMM warehouse exceeds 200 people. Most of them are in a serious or very serious condition,” said the human rights defender of the self-proclaimed republic Geham Stepanyan on social media.
“Medical support (in Nagorno-Karabakh) is insufficient. Medical planes must land as soon as possible to save lives,” added an official in the breakaway Armenian-majority region of Azerbaijan, whose armed forces have just retaken control of it.
Ethnic Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh began a mass exodus by car to Armenia on Sunday after Azerbaijan defeated militants from the separatist region in a conflict dating back to Soviet times, Reuters writes.
