“Hungary’s independence must be protected with all tools to prevent foreign attempts to influence (Hungary’s internal affairs),” Mate Kocs, leader of the Fidesz parliamentary group, said on public radio Kossuth on Sunday.

According to Kocish, Fidesz, led by (ultranationalist) Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, will present a legislative package that will target politicians, parties, non-governmental organizations and media that receive support from abroad.

Although the specific content of the corresponding draft law is currently unknown, according to the portal 444.hu, Fidesz argued for this draft by the fact that in the previous elections, some opposition parties would have received support from abroad.

Mate Kocish made it clear that the considered changes would oblige all public movements participating in elections to obey the same norms of auditing, functioning and financing that apply to official political parties.

The US ambassador to Hungary, David Pressman, responded by saying that it is “very dangerous to assume that foreign countries want to interfere in the internal affairs of Hungary” and to use so-called threats to limit the right to freedom of expression. , reports the same portal.

In 2017, the Orbán government and its parliamentary majority already passed a law that required NGOs receiving more than €23,000 from abroad to provide a list of donors and identify themselves as “foreign-funded organizations”.

Four years later, after the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) decided that it violated EU law, the law was repealed, reminds EFE.
