The police and spokesmen for the Hungarian prosecutor’s office declined to comment on the incident, Reuters reports.

Hungarian online media reported that the explosion occurred at a house on the outskirts of the city, not far from the border with Slovakia, while police were responding to the threat.

The local press said that the author, whose identity has not yet been established, also died as a result of the explosion.

In a Facebook post, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed his condolences to the policeman who died in the line of duty, without specifically mentioning the incident reported by local media.

His ruling Fidesz parliamentary group also said in a statement that a policeman had died in an explosion in the northern city of Esztergom.

Local media reported that several police officers were also injured and taken to hospital.
