Armenia accused Azerbaijani forces of opening fire on its troops’ positions in the border area late in the evening after a ceasefire agreement was reached in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, Reuters reported.
Azerbaijan immediately denied the incident.
Armenia’s Defense Ministry said its troops were attacked with small arms near the town of Sotk on the border between the two countries, about 140 km from Karabakh, which is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan.
Such skirmishes often occur in the border areas between the two former Soviet states in the South Caucasus, which are trying to reach a long-term peace agreement.
At least 200 people have been killed and more than 400 injured in Karabash by an offensive by Azerbaijani forces, a human rights activist in the separatist region said on Wednesday.
Earlier on Wednesday, Azerbaijan said it had ended hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh after its success on the battlefield forced Armenian separatist forces to agree to a ceasefire that would return the territory fully under Baku’s control.
Thousands of Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh gathered on Wednesday at an airport where Russian peacekeepers were stationed after separatist forces in the enclave accepted a ceasefire deal and surrendered to Azerbaijan, Reuters reported.
The separatists, who lead the self-styled “Republic of Artsakh”, urged the 120,000-strong population not to rush to the airport of the capital Stepanakert.
Azerbaijan declared that it “restored its sovereignty”
The president of Azerbaijan said that Azerbaijan has “restored its sovereignty” over Nagorno-Karabakh after a lightning victory over Armenian separatists, who “started” to lay down their arms, reports AFP.
“Most” of the forces and equipment of the Armenian separatists have been “destroyed,” President Ilham Aliyev said at a press conference, adding that, according to him, the Armenian authorities have demonstrated “political competence” by not directly intervening in the conflict.
The separatists, defeated during the day, announced in a press release that they had signed an “agreement on the complete cessation of hostilities at 1:00 p.m. (09:00 GMT) with the mediation of the Russian peacekeeping command.”
On Wednesday evening, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that negotiations on the future of the enclave would be “mediated” by Russian forces on the ground.
