
If we divide Romanians in the labor market by age generation, we find that currently the cohort with the highest average income is Generation Y or Millennials, i.e. those born between 1981 and 1996. According to the Institute of Statistics, in 2020 the category with the highest gross income was 35-40 years old, the age group corresponding to the oldest of the Millennials.
This is also the age group with the largest income gap between men and women. The oldest millennial earns a national average of 6,026 lei if he is a man and 5,577 lei if he is a woman.
Generation X, on the other hand, does not see such persistent differences between the income of women and men. On the contrary, the wage gap is close to zero.
