Iranian security forces on Saturday arrested several people who wanted to “kill” Mahsa Amini’s father, whose death sparked a massive protest movement a year ago, the official Irna news agency reported, AFP reported.
Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman, died on September 16, 2022, in custody after being arrested by the morality police for allegedly violating Iran’s strict dress code for women. His death led to weeks of protests against the regime.
“Security forces arrested several members of a terrorist group who wanted to kill Amjad Amini, the father of Mahsa Amini,” IRNA quoted Kurdistan Provincial Deputy Governor Mehdi Ramezani as saying.
That attack was “thwarted,” he added, without giving details about the “terrorist group.”
Masha Amini’s father, briefly arrested
Earlier, human rights groups said that Iranian security forces briefly detained Mahsa Amini’s father.
The Kurdistan Human Rights Network said that before Amjad’s release, Amini was warned not to celebrate the anniversary of his daughter’s death.
Iran’s official news agency IRNA denied that Amjad Amini had been arrested, but did not say whether he had been briefly detained or warned.
Earlier, social media and reports by human rights groups said security forces had taken up positions around Amini’s home in Saqez, western Iran.
IRNA reported that the attempted attack occurred when Amjad Amini was visiting his daughter’s grave in a cemetery in the city of Saqqez in Kurdistan province.
Since the start of the protest movement, hundreds of people, including police officers, have been killed and thousands more arrested. Seven men were executed on charges of killing or wounding law enforcement officers.
