Prosecutors said the bullet was fired at random and pierced the woman’s bedroom window.

Marseille has been rocked by escalating violence between drug-trafficking gangs that has left at least 40 people dead.

The woman is at least the third person not involved in the violence to be killed in such attacks.

On Sunday night, several shots were fired from a Kalashnikov assault rifle in the apartment on the third floor of the building where she lived with her mother.

“She was hospitalized with a serious, life-threatening head injury. She died on Tuesday morning,” Marseille prosecutor Dominique Laurence said.

The armed attack took place in the area of a pharmacy known to police as a drug outlet, the prosecutor added in a statement.

Law enforcement officers found 23 shell casings from Kalashnikov assault rifles at the scene.

Three other apartments in the building were also hit by bullets, but according to the prosecutor, other residents were not injured.
