The video, which has gone viral, shows the 36-year-old running onto the ferry at the port of Piraeus, Athens, just in time for the ramp to still be down.

The man can be seen trying three times to climb aboard, but crew members prevent him, then one of them pushes him, causing him to lose his balance and fall into the sea.

Despite the screams of passengers who see the man in the water and fear for his life, the ferry leaves port as scheduled for Heraklion, Crete, leaving the man to drown without coming to his rescue.

After seeing the video on social media, port authorities ordered the ferry back to Piraeus, where the captain and three other crew members were arrested.

“It’s hard to understand, it’s an unthinkable, unbearable tragedy,” Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Facebook. “This is not the country we want.”

Attica Group, which owns the ferry, said it was shocked and “willing to cooperate with the authorities to carry out a thorough investigation”.
