The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has accused Russian oligarch of Ukrainian origin Mykhailo Fridman of financing Russia’s war against Ukraine, CNN reports.
Friedman is the chairman of Alfa Group, a private conglomerate that operates mainly in Russia and the countries of the former Soviet Union and includes banking, insurance, retail and mineral water production. According to the Bloomberg Billionaire’s Index, his fortune is $11.4 billion.
Friedman is also the chairman of Alfa Bank, Russia’s fourth largest financial company and largest private bank.
Last week, Alfa Bank was hit with sanctions that will prevent it from raising money in the US market.
Friedman is one of the few Russian oligarchs who opposes a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. In the first days of the war, he called the conflict a “tragedy” for both Ukrainians and Russians.
In a statement, the SBU made the following claims:
- Since Moscow launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Friedman has “poured” about 2 billion rubles (about $20 million) into several Russian military factories, including the Tula Ammunition Plant, which produces ammunition for the army, and Ural Optical, a mechanical plant that produces high-tech equipment for fighter jets and helicopters.
- He uses the assets of “Alpha Groups” to mass distribute dry rations, clothing and other products that are supplied to the military.
- Organized the collection of materials and technical assistance for the needs of Russian troops fighting in Ukraine.
- His insurance companies are engaged in the insurance of military equipment, as well as life and health insurance of Russian soldiers.
- Investigators notified Friedman of the charges “based on the evidence gathered,” the statement added.
“Currently, the suspect is hiding from justice abroad. Comprehensive measures are being taken to bring him to justice. The perpetrator faces up to 8 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property,” the message reads.
CNN reached out to Friedman, who declined to comment on the SBU’s allegations.
